Be a scribe! Your body will be sleek, your hand will be soft... You are one who sits grandly in your house; your servants answer speedily; beer is poured copiously; all who see you rejoice in good cheer. Happy is the heart of him who writes; he is young each day.
Ptahotep, 2500 BC
If only! Maybe being a writer was an easier gig in Ancient Egypt.
If you are thinking of becoming a writer, I must warn you that far from your body being sleek, it's likely to get lumpish and lazy, you will sit huddled in a duvet in your messy house, you won't have any servants and if you pour the beer too copiously you won't get much writing done. But it's still the best job in the world!
A lot of the books I write are things that are true. Others are totally made up. Even the made up ones aren't entirely lies. Stories help us discover universal truths through literal lies. So that lies/truth thing - it's trickier than it looks.
